While the city's residents marveled at MahaNakhon, some nationalist elements went around questioning whether the building had breached Thai labour laws which restrict foreigners. It is surprising that these nationalist dinosaurs do not know that foreign architects have been involved in designing various structures in Thailand for decades. There have been some celebrated Thai architects such as Sumet Jumsai, but there is always the aspect of thinking outside the box when it comes to having outsiders consider and suggest new approaches. But before any of that can happen, some of the laws that were drafted in the stone age, such as the one that restricts foreign architects, need to be revamped in a way that reflects changing global trends. This kind of outdated thinking will only make us more complacent and limit competition that could prompt Thai architects to improve their skills.
